Miranda was named after a character in the William Shakespeare play \’The Tempest\’. It was named by James Murphy, manager of the Holt estate.
In 1921, James Murphy wrote in a letter, \”the name Miranda was given to the locality by me as manager of the Holt Sutherland Company which I formed in 1881. I thought it a soft, euphonious, musical and appropriate name for a beautiful place.\”
The land was sold to Thomas Holt in the 1860s. The original plan was to use the land for a sheep and cattle farm. However, when that plan failed, the fertile ground was leased to market gardeners instead.
