The name Cronulla is derived from kurranulla, which means “place of the pink seashells” in the dialect of the area’s Aboriginal inhabitants, the Gweagal. The beaches were named by Robert Dixon, a surveyor in 1828, and by 1840, the main beach was still known as Karranulla. It was in 1852, when the schooner Venus was wrecked on the beach, that it was called Cooranulla in newspaper reports. On 26 February 1908, it was officially changed to Cronulla.
Located on a peninsula framed by Botany Bay, Bate Bay, Port Hacking and Gunnamatta Bay, this beach-side suburb of Sydney is steeped in rich history.
